Points clés
- 1Heat-damaged biologics usually look completely normal — the only protection is validated shipping and arrival checks.
- 2Freezing is as damaging as heat: insulin exposed to freezing must be discarded even after thawing and looking normal.
- 3Check the temperature indicator the moment you open the parcel and photograph the reading before any use.
- 4Quarantine and contact the supplier if coolant has fully melted or a temperature flag has triggered — do not use the product.

1Why temperature matters more than it appears
Biologic medicines are proteins. Heat, freezing and repeated temperature cycling can denature them, reducing potency or causing aggregation that may increase immunogenicity. Crucially, a degraded protein product often looks completely normal.
That is the danger: unlike spoiled food, a heat-damaged biologic usually gives no visual warning. The only protection is process — verified shipping conditions and correct storage — rather than inspection alone.
2What proper shipping looks like
If you are having cold-chain medicine delivered, these are the minimum expectations.
- Insulated container with validated coolant, not loose domestic ice packs.
- A temperature indicator or data logger included in the box.
- Transit time short enough to stay inside the validated period.
- Delivery requiring a signature, so the parcel is not left in sun or heat.
- Clear instructions on the outside stating that refrigerated contents are enclosed.
- A named contact to call immediately if the shipment arrives warm.
3Arrival inspection
Do this before the parcel leaves your hands, and photograph it.
- 1Note the delivery time and how long the parcel may have been in transit or unattended.
- 2Check any temperature indicator immediately and photograph the reading.
- 3Confirm coolant packs are still cold and have not fully melted.
- 4Check the product itself is cold to the touch.
- 5Inspect for freezing signs: ice crystals, frosting, clumping or unusual cloudiness.
- 6Confirm the labelled storage condition matches how it arrived.
- 7Refrigerate immediately at the labelled temperature, away from the freezer compartment and the rear wall.
4Storage at home
Use a dedicated refrigerator thermometer and check it weekly. Domestic fridges vary considerably between shelves, and door storage is subject to large temperature swings each time the door opens.
Keep products in original cartons to protect from light, never store them in the freezer compartment or against the rear cooling plate, and observe the labelled in-use period once a pen or vial is opened. Plan for power cuts if you depend on refrigerated medicine.

Across our full referenced dataset, 476 referenced molecules average a 59× price gap, 84% of them are at least 10× cheaper in India, and the widest documented comparison is Colchicine at 344×. Across the full referenced dataset the gap is systematic rather than anecdotal: 84% of anchored molecules are at least 10× cheaper, with a 59× average ratio — a market-structure effect repeated across all 26 therapy areas.

Questions fréquentes
Check the labelled in-use conditions. Many insulins tolerate a defined period at controlled room temperature, but tolerances differ by product and high ambient temperatures shorten them. Ask a pharmacist with the specific product in front of you rather than guessing.
Usually you cannot tell visually, which is exactly why temperature indicators and validated shipping matter. Rely on the monitoring device and documented handling rather than appearance.
No. Direct contact with frozen packs can freeze the product. Validated shippers use a barrier layer specifically to prevent this.
